Your next customer may never visit your website

AI Overviews and zero-click searches are changing how people find your business on Google. Here is what it means, and what to do about it.

Someone types "best heat pump for a cottage" into Google. At the top of the page, an AI-generated summary compares three brands in a few lines. They read it, narrow their choice to two models, and close the browser.

Your content may have shaped that decision. You never met the reader.

Google used to be a road sign. Now it answers for you.

For 25 years, Google worked like a road sign. You asked a question, it pointed you to a website. Today, Google increasingly answers the question itself, right on the results page, through AI Overviews.

The numbers are hard to ignore

The shift is measurable, and fast. According to SparkToro and Similarweb:

  • 68% of Google searches ended without a single click in the first four months of 2026, up from 60% in 2024. That is the fastest acceleration in more than a decade.

  • AI Overviews now appear on roughly 40% of informational searches.

  • Even the #1 organic result has seen its average click-through rate fall from 31.7% to 27.6%.

My U.S. clients have been living this for months. Here in Quebec, Google's French rollout is moving more slowly. That gives us a window. A short one.

Your website now has two audiences

This is the shift that changes everything. Your content is now read by two very different visitors:

  • The person searching on their phone while they wait for their coffee.

  • The AI system reading your content to build its own answer.

The goal now is to become a source that Google's AI considers credible enough to quote.

The good news: both audiences reward the same thing

You don't have to choose between writing for humans and writing for machines. They reward the same content:

  • Clear answers, early.

  • Specific numbers, backed by credible sources.

  • A recognizable point of view.

  • First-hand experience no language model can invent.

The long introduction that takes five paragraphs to reach the point? AI skips it. To be fair, so do your readers. They have just been too polite to tell you.

Your traffic will drop. That's not the whole story.

Your traffic will probably decline. Before you panic, look at who is still clicking.

People who just wanted a quick answer now get it straight from Google. Most of them were never going to become customers anyway. The ones who still click have crossed a threshold. They are getting ready to buy.

Think of a retail store. Picture 30% fewer people walking through the door, but nearly everyone who does is ready to buy. That is a better month, even if your traffic report says otherwise.

The click is becoming rare. Make it count.

What to do now

If your content strategy hasn't caught up, this is the moment. Three moves:

  1. Answer the real question in the first lines. Put your clearest answer up top, where both the reader and the AI will find it.

  2. Back it with specifics. Real numbers, named sources, first-hand experience. That is what earns a quote, and a click.

  3. Say something only you can say. A point of view and lived experience are the one thing AI can't generate.

Frequently asked

What is a zero-click search?

A zero-click search is a Google search that ends without the user clicking any result. They get their answer directly on the results page, often from an AI Overview.

What are Google AI Overviews?

AI Overviews are AI-generated summaries Google shows at the top of many results. They answer the question directly, pulling from web content Google considers credible.

Does this mean SEO is dead?

No. It changes the goal. Beyond ranking to earn clicks, you now want to be the source the AI quotes. Clear answers, real data and genuine expertise win on both fronts.
